As I said, there were some major issues with the film including the finale fifteen-minutes. The performances were a mixed bag but for the most part I thought they were good enough for this type of picture with Shaye turning in a fine performance and I thought a very believable as well. I thought the opening sequence was extremely effective as were some of the later scenes between Rainier and her brother. I also liked that the film brought some family drama into the matter. You curl up knowing something is about to happen but Robitel makes you have fun waiting for the scare to come.

I kept think of Craven's thoughts while watching this movie because the scare scenes here are perfectly built up and executed. If you drag the build up too far then the scene will lose its impact. If you reveal the scare too soon you cheap seconds worth of tension. Wes Craven once gave an interview where he talked about tension and he said that you have to know how long to have a build up to a scare last. Director Adam Robitel is certainly the star of the picture because he does a wonderful job at building up the tension. With that said, there's no question that there were some major flaws with the picture but at the same time the film managed to be quite creepy at times and this here made up for any other issues.

INSIDIOUS: THE LAST KEY seems to have gotten a lot of negative reviews from critics and fans but I personally thought it was a lot better than the third film in the series and on the whole I thought it was very entertaining. She decides to fight her fears and return to the house but soon she realizes that an event from her past might explain her current situation. The only thing is that he's living in her childhood home where she is still traumatized from events that happened there. Sense is not a strong suit here, the latter stages being at times convoluted.
Any attempts at twists were generally not surprising and ended up not being very plausible. Script lacks tautness and has some humour that felt misplaced, overdone and jarring with everything else. There is very little new here or much to set it apart from what was seen before, being even more derivative than the first three entries which lacked originality too but not like this. Capped off by an ending that's cheesy, ridiculous and anti-climactic. The latter parts of the previous three films also went over-the-top after being restrained at first, but not to this extent. The last third comes over as too silly and over-the-top, the suspense and dread diminishing and the lack of sense and stupidity increasing. Some of the film is on the dull side, with it unlike the first three films taking the restraint of some of the early parts too far, which was more of a problem with the scares being infrequent and not as effective as before.
It does lack tension and suspense all the way through and other scares are predictable, more silly than creepy and felt like throwing in as many horror elements as one can muster regardless of originality, parts feel recycled too. Regrettably, 'Insidious: The Last Key' has drawbacks. Acting is not bad at all, with the best assets being Lin Shaye's ghoulishly gusto-filled performance, something that was consistent throughout the whole franchise, and the interesting development and character of Elise. Direction at times is competent and there are some genuine shocks and some creepy scares and dread. Although a bit too obvious in spots, the music is hauntingly atmospheric. It looks slick and stylish while having a spooky setting and suitably nightmarish lighting. First and foremost, 'Insidious: The Last Key' looks great, especially for horror films released in recent years (too many of which have looked like they were made on the schlocky cheap). There are big drawbacks but there are good things here too. 'Insidious: Chapter 2' for me was watchable but not as good, and feel the same about the third instalment and this latest, and perhaps last, one.
So watched 'Insidious: Chapter 2' hoping it would be as good. It didn't blow me away but it was well made and genuinely scary. Although there are people who understandably dislike it, found myself enjoying the first 'Insidious'. Also with an appreciation, if not quite undying love, for horror. Decided to finally watch them all, with the intent of reviewing the latest film as part of my quest to see as many 2018 films as possible and wanting to see how it compared with the previous outings. It took me a while to watch 'Insidious' and its follow ups, with so much going on with my studies and commitments and with an ever growing watch and review list.
